A multi-stakeholder conference dedicated to hear the voice of the grassroots and the wetland community is a rarity, and not heard of in West Bengal. But that is exactly what materialized is August 30-31 this year. Titled Connecting Wetland Narratives to Action Plan: A Stakeholders’ Dialogue, this conference deliberated on the recent judgments in April and May 2022 involving the Dankuni Wetlands and the East Kolkata Wetlands, as well as some of the other judgments last year that speak of wetland protection in India as a whole. It heard from community workers and fishermen about the issues that needed to be understood if wetlands were to be conserved to protect our environment and build resilience against climate change. The conference also paid attention to the role of women in the context of wetlands and deliberated about bringing wetland women’s issues at the core of the discussions.
